Assisting in the professional development of youth who struggle with mental health and addiction.
Like many newcomer kids, I come from humble beginnings. My parents moved from India to Kenya, then from Kenya to Toronto!
My whole life they worked in a factory in Scarborough. Despite their long working hours, they always found time for me and my brothers.
They are the reason why I have a passion for this city like no other.
All for Toronto I doubled down on what I think this city has been missing: a whole infrastructure! I want to give back to my city that embraced me and my family. Toronto gave my family a chance to be who we wanted to be. So it’s only right I pay it forward to the next generation. They need it.
These days I see a lot of people doing music just so they can make it out of Toronto.
Toronto can be a cold and depressing place; and our sound reflects that. While I always encourage artists to explore new places, I’ve always aimed at making Toronto a hub where talent can survive and doesn't have to leave our great city.
So help me help this city succeed with an infrastructure that makes sense. Right now there is no process. Artists are randomly doing what they can. They throw things on the wall seeing if it sticks.
This is why I started the Sunny Diamonds Creative Academy. It’s a place where youth are able to experiment creatively without limits. I’ve always believed in empowering people who might never get a ‘shot’ unless someone brings them into a community. Through our programming, we provide state-of-the-art creative mentorship to youth who can’t afford to spend hundreds of dollars on studio time.
I always live by a few quotes “be who you needed when you were younger” & “if you build it they will come.” The Sunny Diamonds Creative Academy does just that.
We have structured our programs in such a way that it helps underrepresentated youth in our city.
“City on Beat” brings together young people from across the GTA to learn the art of beat making from local industry professionals.
To address the underrepresentation of women in the music industry, and in beat making in particular, City on Beat also hosts exclusive workshops for young women featuring female producers, sound engineers, DJs, and artists.
"Brown Art Here" is a program aimed at empowering young artists from South Asian descent across Canada by providing culturally relevant creative mentorship opportunities.
Young artists will connect with successful South Asian creatives in the music industry to ultimately create a Brown Art Hear EP, showcasing South-Asian Canadian talent.
We're here to help the city grow
"Without Sunny's Creative Academy I would be stuck with the same crowd and never understand my full potential."
